LASIK is a surgical procedure intended to reduce a person's dependency on glasses or contact lenses. LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis and is a procedure that permanently changes the shape of the cornea, the clear covering of the front of the eye, using an excimer laser. A laser is used to cut a flap in the cornea. A hinge is left at one end of this flap. The flap is folded back revealing the stroma, the middle section of the cornea. Pulses from a computer-controlled laser reshape the cornea and the flap is replaced. The reshaping of the cornea is what allows light to then properly focus on the retina.
The iLASIK procedure is a combination of the most advanced diagnostic and therapeutic modalities in refractive surgery available today. It combines the personalized WaveScan mapping technology, the precise flap making technology of the IntraLase, and the customized reshaping of the cornea with the VISX excimer laser.

First, the WaveScan system creates a 3D map of your eye, measuring and capturing your unique imperfections 25 times more precisely than with standard methods. Iris Registration technology helps align the laser with your eye, so that the laser is delivered to the areas of the eye in a precise manner.

The IntraLase FS Laser is then used to create a thin flap in the outer portion of the cornea. No longer is a blade needed to create the flap. The laser is both rapid and extremely accu rate, making this a safe and comfortable procedure. The laser creates an optimal surface underneath the flap, leading to faster healing and better visual outcomes.

The WaveScan mapping information collected earlier is then integrated with the VISX Excimer Laser to deliver accurate custom treatments. This Advanced CustomVue procedure is a truly customized and precise form of laser vision correction.
