Pediatric Cataract Surgeries

Though rare, children can be born with cataracts that affect their vision. Cataract surgery for children differs from adult surgery because of the unique anatomy of a child’s eye, requiring several modifications from standard cataract surgery. Usually, if a child is older than 1 year of age, an artificial lens will be implanted at the time of removal of the cataract (just as in older adults). Dr. Wong is the only pediatric ophthalmologist on Oahu who has equipment to correctly measure and calculate the power of this artificial lens.

Niko

CATARACT SURGERY

Niko is a young, active boy who came in to see Dr. Rupa Wong for decreased vision. She diagnosed him with cataracts and performed cataract removal and lens implantation in each eye. Since then, Niko’s vision has improved to almost 20/20 and for the first time after surgery, he remarked: “I can finally see the clock in school!”. His school performance has improved and he is able to participate in the regular activities of being a kid. Read more about Niko’s journey.

Dr. Rupa Wong

Dr. Rupa Wong is trained to perform a number of pediatric eye surgeries, including the following:

  • Pediatric Cataract Surgeries
  • Blocked Tear Ducts (Click here for more information)
  • Eye Muscle Surgery (Strabismus)
  • Removal of styes
  • Dermoid removal
  • Children’s eyelid surgeries

Pediatric Strabismus Surgeries

Pediatric Eye Muscle Surgery (for crossed or lazy eyes). Strabismus is the term used to define misalignment of the eyes. Depending upon if the eyes cross in, drift out or if one eye is higher than the other, eye muscle surgery can align the eyes. The muscles of the eye can be weakened or strengthened to achieve the desired result. In children, this type of surgery is not cosmetic since left uncorrected, strabismus can cause a loss of vision in the eye or amblyopia. Amblyopia is a condition in which the brain shuts the vision to that eye off in order to avoid double vision. Medical insurance always covers this type of surgery for children and our office assists in obtaining any necessary prior authorizations. Surgery is performed under general anesthesia and typically takes about one hour. There are no patches or shields after surgery and downtime is quite minimal. If you believe your child has strabismus, please click here to schedule an appointment.
